10 YEARS OF CINE ALIMOS
JULY 2016
«On 10 July a cinema is born next to the waves!» — that is how the first leaflet with the Cine Alimos programme announced its opening. The inauguration took place on 10 July 2016 and the ribbon was cut by director Yannis Smaragdis, with the late Yannis Mortzos beside him. The photograph from that day captured the emotion and the joy on everyone’s faces at the start of this new cultural venture.
The opening film was «God Loves Caviar», an international production by Yannis Smaragdis, which seems to have brought us luck: in the ten years that followed, the open-air cinema of the Municipality of Alimos kept growing, despite the obstacles some tried to put in its way.
JUNE 2026
At Christmas 2025 «Kapodistrias» was released in cinemas. It set a 15-year record at the Greek box office, passing 700,000 tickets within a few weeks and becoming one of the most commercially successful Greek films of all time. Audiences embraced the film and its acclaimed director, Yannis Smaragdis, saw his work fully vindicated. So, for the tenth anniversary of Cine Alimos, we open with «Kapodistrias» and Smaragdis. Where else would we go without our lucky charm?
Over all these years, the open-air cinema of the Municipality of Alimos has tried to stand by its audience with consistency: free quality films every week, art-house titles as well as major commercial hits, landmark films from the past as well as first-run releases, Oscar-winning films as well as award winners from Cannes, Berlin, Venice and elsewhere, and visits by distinguished figures of Greek cinema who talked with the audience after the screenings (Voutsas, Vogiatzis, Vafeas, Papakaliatis, Klaouri, Boulmetis, Charalambidis, Nathena, Karabetis, Atheridis, Karydi, Zouganelis, Kouris, Karazisis, Topalidou, Torstens, Nakos, Vlagkopoulou and others).
A warm «thank you» from the municipal authority to everyone who honoured, helped and supported us, and to everyone who worked with dedication so that Cine Alimos, our cinema, has run as smoothly as possible for ten years now!
Andreas Kondylis
Mayor of Alimos
