HELLENISTIC – ROMAN PERIOD
HELLENISTIC - ROMAN PERIOD
According to the excavation evidence, life continued in the area west of Mount Hymettus during the Hellenistic, Byzantine and Late Byzantine periods, although the evidence for habitation and use of the area by the rural population is limited and sporadic for these periods.
Some of the Hellenistic and Roman remains of the period are the pottery workshop in Marathonomachon Square, graves on the Geroulanos estate and the water drainage conduit near the theatre of Euonymon.
A characteristic example of historical continuity is the two-chamber Roman tomb found on Serifou Street in Ano Kalamaki. The tomb had been built of ceramic bricks, stones and marble members that came from a funerary monument of the classical period.
