NSRF – SHARED BICYCLES

PROJECT TITLE: Sustainable micromobility through a shared bicycle system
IMPLEMENTING BODY: Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving (CRES)
//Municipality of Alimos
FUND: European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
PROGRAMME: Environment and Climate Change (PEKA)
DESCRIPTION: Through this action, every Municipality of a metropolitan centre will create a shared electric bicycle network which, together with the other eligible interventions, will form an integrated and functional set of services and means, contributing effectively to improving journeys at the micromobility level.
The interventions concern:
- The supply of shared electric city bicycles, suitably designed for shared-use systems.
- The creation of a network of shared locking AND charging points for bicycles, with automatic charging of the bicycle while it is locked.
- An integrated platform for the remote management of field devices (electric bicycle chargers and parking/charging stations).
- Integrated applications for use and information for citizens (web and mobile applications) for micromobility services.
- An integrated platform for managing micromobility services and data, with the appropriate software and hardware.
- Works to connect to utility networks, where required.
RESULTS: The interventions carried out under the project contribute directly to urban regeneration and have positive effects on reducing energy and fuel consumption, as well as on reducing operating costs for the residents of metropolitan municipalities, since bicycles partly replace private means of transport. These interventions also support sustainable multimodal urban mobility and micromobility, as shared bicycles are largely used to reach public transport stations.
Specifically, the benefits of the action are:
- Reduced use of private cars, and particularly of conventional ones
- A reduction in the number of accidents caused by private cars
- Freeing up valuable urban space to create “green” infrastructure such as pedestrian streets and cycle paths
- Promoting energy-efficient public transport through synergies with shared electric bicycle systems
- Strengthening local entrepreneurship, through opportunities to provide support and maintenance services for shared electric bicycle systems
- Highlighting the environmental profile of the area and increasing tourist flows and revenue, as such systems are expected to attract foreign visitors to tourist areas
- Creating integrated mobility management systems with unified and effective information for citizens
- Reducing travel costs for citizens
- Making urban journeys easier and reducing traffic congestion
- Reducing the environmental footprint by improving air quality and protecting public health
- Contributing to the National Energy Targets described in the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), to national strategies such as the one for cycling, and to other national policies such as the implementation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans of municipalities.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the project is to develop and strengthen a shared network of electric, environmentally friendly bicycles at the level of the municipalities of metropolitan centres which, in synergy with the other interventions (applications for use and information for citizens (web and mobile applications) for micromobility services, and a platform for managing micromobility services and data), will create an integrated and functional set of services and means, contributing effectively to improving journeys at the micromobility level.
